Free 5e Tools — Eight Browser Generators (No Signup)

These are the free 5e tools we built and use ourselves. Open in a browser, generate what you need, and get back to the table. No account required.

For Dungeon Masters

  • D&D Loot Generator — Treasure hoards, individual loot, and magic items scaled by Challenge Rating. Includes coins, gemstones, art objects, and 5e-compliant magic items with proper rarity tiers and attunement requirements.
  • D&D Shop Generator — Complete shops with unique shopkeepers, personality traits, and themed inventory. Taverns, armories, general stores, magic shops — appropriate pricing baked in.
  • 5e Encounter Calculator — Balance combats by Challenge Rating against your party. Difficulty thresholds (easy / medium / hard / deadly) calculated using 2024 5e rules.
  • Deck of Many Things — Draw cards from the deck without printing or shuffling. Each draw includes the official effect text and saving throws.
  • Fantasy City Name Generator — Quick city / town / village names with cultural variants. Pair it with the shop generator for instant settlement prep.

For Players

  • D&D Backstory Generator — Character backstories with hooks, motivations, personality traits, and life events. Players use it for inspiration; DMs use it for fast NPCs.
  • Character Name Generator — Names by race and class. Includes pronunciation hints for the trickier ones.

For Daggerheart Players

  • Daggerheart Character Creator — Full character builder for the Daggerheart system. Walks you through ancestry, class, community, and starting equipment, then exports a printable sheet.

Printable 5e Tools and Trackers

Some 5e tools work better off-screen. These pair well with the generators above:

  • D&D Initiative Tracker — Free printable initiative tracker that keeps initiative, HP, AC, and conditions visible to the whole table. Print one per session.
  • Printable D&D Character Sheets — Free downloadable character sheets for 5e. Includes a minimal version for one-shots.
  • D&D Journals — Physical session journals for tracking characters, campaigns, and combat across an entire campaign. Built for DMs and players.
  • How to Prep a D&D Campaign Fast — Our 30-minute session prep workflow using the tools above.

Final Thoughts

The right 5e tools should make running a campaign less work, not more. If you only try one thing from this list, start with the loot generator for your next session — it's the one we lean on most. From there, the rest of the hub is a click away:

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best free 5e tools for new Dungeon Masters?+

For a new DM, the four highest-leverage free tools are an encounter calculator (so combats don't accidentally TPK the party), a loot generator (so rewards feel earned without spending hours rolling tables), a shop generator (so towns feel real without prep), and a session-zero / initiative tracker. All four are free in the Minva 5e tools hub.

Do I need to install anything to use these 5e tools?+

No. The eight generators all run in your browser — open the page, generate what you need, copy or screenshot the result. No accounts, no installs, no app downloads. The Notion templates and printables are paid downloads, but the generators are 100% free.

Can I use these tools with Pathfinder, Daggerheart, or other systems?+

The generators are designed for 5e mechanics specifically (CR scaling, magic item rarity, etc.) but the outputs — names, shops, NPCs, loot themes — translate cleanly to most fantasy TTRPGs. The Daggerheart Character Creator is a dedicated tool for the Daggerheart system. Pathfinder 2e mechanics differ enough that we recommend system-specific tools for encounter balancing.

Are the loot and shop generator results random or can I save them?+

Each generation is fresh. There's no built-in save right now — most people copy-paste the result into Notion, OneNote, or a session prep doc. If you want a structured campaign tracker that saves NPCs, shops, and loot across sessions, our Lorekeeper Notion template is the integrated option.

What's the difference between the loot generator and the shop generator?+

The loot generator produces treasure the party finds — magic items, coin, gemstones, art objects scaled to encounter CR. The shop generator produces a complete shop the party visits — shopkeeper personality, inventory list with prices, shop quirks. Use loot for combat rewards; use shop for downtime spending.

Where can I download a free printable 5e character sheet?+

Our printable D&D character sheet page has free downloadable PDFs in both full and minimal versions. The minimal sheet is what we use for one-shots and convention games.
