Join PatreonCommon D&D shop types you can generate
The D&D shop generator covers the shop archetypes DMs most often need to drop into a session. Each preset stocks the right inventory categories and uses the official 5e price tables, so the shop reads as part of the world the moment players walk in.
Blacksmith shop generator
A D&D blacksmith shop generator stocks martial and simple weapons, all three armor categories, shields, and the smithing reagents a forge realistically carries. Prices come from the PHB equipment table (page 149). The blacksmith NPC includes their specialty (war hammers, fine swords, agricultural tools) so the shop’s identity is more than a price list.
Magic shop generator
The magic shop generator surfaces wands, scrolls, potions, rings, and minor wondrous items — items priced from the DMG magic item value tables (page 135). Magic shops are intentionally rarer than mundane shops in the generator’s output mix, matching the 5e DMG’s advice that magic items should feel uncommon enough to remain special.
Alchemist & potion shop generator
An alchemist or potion shop stocks healing potions across tiers, antitoxins, alchemist’s fire, acid flasks, oils, and crafting reagents. The alchemist NPC carries a specialty (poisons, healing, transmutation) and a quirk — the kind of detail that makes a potion shop encounter feel like a scene, not a vending machine.
Tavern & inn generator
Select tavern or inn and the generator produces an establishment name, the innkeeper NPC, room and meal pricing from the 5e PHB lodging/food table (page 158), and a small inventory of drinks, meals, and travel supplies. Wealth tier flexes between a roadhouse and a city inn — the same template, different price points.
General store generator
The general store catches the “a little of everything” case — rations, rope, torches, bedrolls, tools, basic clothing, ammunition. It’s the default shop type when a settlement is too small for specialized vendors but adventurers still need to resupply.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a D&D shop generator?▼
A D&D shop generator creates a fully stocked merchant for your campaign — inventory, prices, and an NPC shopkeeper with personality. It saves DMs the time of manually picking items and pricing them, so you can improvise a realistic shop on the fly.
What types of shops can I generate?▼
The generator supports multiple shop types including blacksmiths, general stores, magic shops, alchemists, taverns, and more. Each shop type produces a relevant inventory with appropriate items and pricing.
Are the prices in the shop generator based on official D&D 5e rules?▼
Yes. Item prices are based on the official equipment tables from the D&D 5e Player's Handbook and Dungeon Master's Guide.
Can I use the shop generator for systems other than D&D 5e?▼
The item names and shop types work for most fantasy TTRPG systems. Prices are calibrated to D&D 5e's economy, so you may want to adjust those for other systems.
Is the D&D shop generator free?▼
Yes — the D&D shop generator is completely free to use with no sign-up required.
How do I generate a magic item shop in D&D 5e?▼
Pick 'Magic Shop' as the shop type and the generator stocks it with wands, scrolls, potions, rings, and minor wondrous items — all priced from the 5e DMG magic item value tables (page 135). The shopkeeper NPC comes with personality, mannerisms, and a haggle stance, so a magic shop encounter is plug-and-play.
Can I generate a tavern or inn?▼
Yes — select 'Tavern' or 'Inn' as the shop type. You'll get a tavern name, the innkeeper NPC, the room and meal pricing pulled from the 5e PHB lodging/food table (page 158), and a small inventory of drinks, meals, and travel supplies appropriate to the establishment's wealth tier.
How do I generate a blacksmith shop?▼
Select 'Blacksmith' and the generator stocks weapons (martial and simple), armor (light, medium, heavy), shields, smithing supplies, and ammunition — all at the 5e PHB equipment table prices. The blacksmith NPC includes their forge specialty and a hint at custom-order availability.
Does this generate potion shops or alchemists?▼
Yes. Select 'Alchemist' and the shop is stocked with potions of healing across tiers, oils, antitoxins, alchemical fire and acid, plus crafting reagents and components — priced from the 5e DMG potion tables (page 187). The alchemist NPC comes with their specialty (poisons, healing, transmutation) and a quirk that's table-ready.
Are the shop prices accurate to D&D 5e?▼
Yes — every price comes from the official 5e source books, not a homebrew approximation. Mundane equipment uses the PHB equipment table (page 149), lodging and food uses the lifestyle table (page 158), and magic items use the DMG value tables (page 135). The generator preserves the published price exactly for in-game economy consistency.
